Chihuahua clothes: the best options for summer 2026
Of all the breeds that come into the shop, the chihuahua is the one that generates the most returns over sizing. And it's not the customer's fault. The chihuahua has such particular proportions —thin neck, small chest, slim legs, short back— that a universal size simply doesn't exist for them. Every time a client comes in saying "I got him the S and it slips off his neck", I already know what happened: she used a sizing guide made for a "normal" small dog, not for a chihuahua.
And then there's the summer question. Why put clothes on my chihuahua if it's hot? Here's the short answer, before I get into it: because your chihuahua shivers on a terrace with air conditioning and burns his skin in the sun after fifteen minutes. Summer clothes for a chihuahua aren't aesthetic — they're protection. Let's go in order.
Why a chihuahua needs clothes (and it's not just for looks)
The chihuahua is the breed with the worst thermoregulation in the whole catalogue. Small, with little subcutaneous fat, short coat (or almost no coat in some varieties) and a body that loses and gains heat in seconds. You see it the moment he steps into the sun and the moment he steps into the cold: he trembles, curls up, hides. It's not a quirk — it's poor thermoregulation.
In summer that translates into two concrete problems. First, sunburn. The skin of a short-haired chihuahua, especially in white or light-coloured varieties, burns in the sun just like ours. A light cotton t-shirt with short sleeves or no sleeves protects the back —which is the most exposed area— without overheating. Second, thermal shock: from the heat of the street to the air conditioning of the café, from the cool living room to the hallway. A thin t-shirt cushions those jumps and stops the dog from shivering the moment he steps onto the café terrace.
And a third reason, not strictly medical but something I see every week in the shop: a thin garment helps the chihuahua tolerate contact with surfaces (hot pavement, someone else's sofa, the car floor). It's a dog that feels more comfortable with a layer between him and the world. Some seem more confident the moment you put a t-shirt on them. I'm not making this up — I see it every day.
What to look for in chihuahua clothing: the sizing problem
This is where it gets tricky. And it starts with understanding the sizing system. Many small-dog brands use numeric sizing (Milk & Pepper, for example, runs from 26 to 41), where the number corresponds roughly to back length in centimetres. Others use XXS-XS-S-M-L. And here's the first customer mistake: confusing the M of a small-dog brand with the M of a generic brand — the M of a toy brand is for a 1.5-2 kg dog; the M of a general-purpose brand, for an 8-10 kg dog. They're not the same thing at all.
And within the chihuahua breed itself, two dogs of the same weight may need different sizes. A 3 kg chihuahua with a short back may fit a Milk & Pepper 30; another 3 kg chihuahua with a slightly longer back, the 32. It's not just weight — it's back length. That's why measuring is essential.
Why does the universal size fail the chihuahua more than other small breeds? Because his chest is VERY small in proportion to his weight, his neck is much thinner than a yorkie's, and his back is short. Three points where any brand's standard guide falls short.
What to look at in a t-shirt for a chihuahua, in this order:
- Neck circumference: the head has to pass through without forcing AND the neckline has to stay snug against the dog's neck, not floating. If the neck opening is wider than the chihuahua's actual neck, the t-shirt will spin around all the time.
- Chest girth: key. The chihuahua's chest is narrow. A garment with a chest girth made for a standard toy dog will be huge on him. Always measure the chest girth with a tape before buying.
- Back length: the chihuahua has a short back. A t-shirt that reaches the start of the tail on another toy dog will cover the whole tail on a chihuahua. Take 1-2 cm off the size the general guide indicates.
- Leg holes: the chihuahua's legs are thin. If the garment has sleeves, look at the width of the armhole — if it's too loose, it'll hang slack. That's why, in summer, sleeveless t-shirts are much easier to get right.
If your brand uses numeric sizing (Milk & Pepper, for example, runs from 26 to 41 where the number is roughly back length in cm), the easiest thing is to measure your chihuahua's back length and pick the corresponding number. As a very rough reference: a 3 kg chihuahua with a short back may fit the 30 well; one of the same 3 kg but slightly longer back, the 32. And if the brand uses S-M-L sizing, get that brand's specific size chart and compare with your measurements — never extrapolate between brands.
Summer clothes for chihuahua: what works and what doesn't
Light t-shirts and bodysuits
This is the queen category of summer for chihuahuas. Fine cotton or stretch fabric t-shirts, sleeveless or short-sleeved, that the dog wears like a second skin. The ones that work best are stretchy because they adapt to the small chest and thin neck of the chihuahua. And since they don't have sleeves, you avoid the armhole width problem.
What a good summer t-shirt for a chihuahua needs: breathable fabric (cotton or cotton with elastane), elastic neck opening, back not too long, and a loose fall over the belly (not tight, so air circulates). On prints, light ones reflect the sun more than dark ones — important for dogs that spend time outdoors.
UV and sun-protection clothing
For chihuahuas who go outside a lot during sunny hours —or who live in high-radiation areas, southern Spain, coast— there are garments with UV-protective fabrics. They tend to be more technical t-shirts, with a finish that filters UVA rays. They aren't in the Mascoboutique catalogue as such (not our speciality), but we do have fine light-coloured cotton t-shirts that do a similar job in the late afternoon and, especially, for morning and evening walks.
And if your chihuahua is very heat-sensitive, the cooling vest is the other option: a garment you wet before putting on, giving a cool sensation during the walk. It's not a "fashion" t-shirt — it's functional. But it saves the afternoon on a really hot day.
What to avoid in summer
What a chihuahua should NOT wear in summer:
- Thick jumpers or any winter garment. No matter how much the chihuahua trembles indoors, in summer he needs to dissipate heat.
- Fleece, wool or non-breathable synthetic fabrics. They don't let air through and raise body temperature — dangerous in a breed that already regulates badly.
- Clothes very tight around the chest. They stop him from breathing properly — remember a chihuahua is a small dog with a high respiratory rate, you don't want to squeeze his ribcage.
- Garments with lots of decoration (sequins, sewn appliqués). They trap heat, catch on the sofa and many chihuahuas end up biting at them because they're annoying.
- Bigger sizes "in case he grows". The chihuahua doesn't grow — he's already an adult at 8-10 months. If the garment is loose, it won't fit better with time. It'll just fit badly and you'll return it.
How to measure your chihuahua to get the right size
This is the most important part of the article. If you only take one thing from here, let it be this: do NOT buy clothes for a chihuahua without measuring. It costs two minutes and saves you a return.
You need a sewing tape (flexible) or, failing that, a string and a ruler. Measure your chihuahua standing up, relaxed, with the coat pressed flat under the tape (not tense, not tight).
- Neck circumference: wrap around the neck where the collar would sit. Note the measurement in centimetres.
- Chest girth: at the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement.
- Back length: from the base of the neck (where the collar ends) to the start of the tail. Do NOT include the tail.
- Dog's weight: to cross-reference with the size chart. Minimum: 1.5 kg. Maximum for a standard chihuahua: 3-3.5 kg.
With those three measurements and the weight, open the brand's size chart and compare. If your chihuahua falls between two sizes, always the smaller one. In toy dogs, the snug size is always better than the big one — the opposite of humans.
If in doubt, write to us on WhatsApp with the three measurements and the variety (apple-head chihuahua, deer chihuahua, short or long coat). We'll tell you exactly which size to order.
Our selection of chihuahua clothing at Mascoboutique
These are the garments I recommend the most this summer when a client comes in with a chihuahua. All of them are from brands with specific toy and mini sizing, not generic. And they all work for summer as well as for mild spring and autumn.
Azumi T-shirt. By Milk & Pepper. Pink with a rainbow print and an optimistic message on the back. Sleeveless, very stretchy fabric, ideal for female chihuahuas. Milk & Pepper numeric sizing —from 26 to 41— where the number is roughly back length in centimetres. Measure your chihuahua's back and choose the corresponding size.
Miki T-shirt. By Milk & Pepper. Khaki green with camping prints on the back. Sleeveless, stretchy fabric, perfect for chihuahuas heading to the countryside or the mountains. Same Milk & Pepper numeric sizing (measure back length in cm).
Yoan T-shirt. By Milk & Pepper. Another summer option we sell to chihuahua families. Same cut and stretch fabric, different print. These three (Azumi, Miki, Yoan) are the ones I sell most in April, May and June for chihuahuas.
Solena T-shirt. By Milk & Pepper. A more sober design if you want something discreet for everyday wear. Same fabric quality, same small sizes. For older chihuahuas or families who prefer a minimalist look.
Gwenola T-shirt and Heloise T-shirt. Two more options, also by Milk & Pepper, with seasonal prints. Same toy sizing. They work equally well for chihuahuas, yorkies or mini poodles.
For really hot days —a proper heatwave—, the Frozen Cooling Vest by Karlie is a good option. You wet it before the walk and it gives a cool sensation for about an hour and a half. Not for daily use, but it saves the midday walks in July and August. Just check the size chart — the smallest one might still be a bit large for a very mini chihuahua.

In short
If your dog is a chihuahua and you're looking for summer clothes for the first time, here's the quick summary:
- Yes, the chihuahua needs clothes in summer too. Not for aesthetics, but for thermoregulation and sun protection.
- MEASURE your dog before buying. Neck, chest, back and weight. Universal sizing doesn't exist for this breed.
- If in doubt between two sizes, always the smaller one.
- Sleeveless t-shirts, stretch fabric, breathable. Avoid wool, fleece or heavy synthetics.
- Light colours to reflect the sun; sober prints for daily wear, fun ones for photos.
- For extreme heat days, wet cooling vest — but not as a daily garment.
- Brands with specific toy sizing: Milk & Pepper is the best for chihuahua in your usual catalogue.
And, most importantly, be patient: the chihuahua is the breed with the highest rate of clothing returns, not because the brand is wrong, but because the first purchase rarely gets it right without measuring. If you buy with measurements in hand and pick the snug size, the returns disappear. And if you live in Madrid, drop by the shop — we'll try several sizes on your chihuahua and you'll leave with the one that really fits.
About the author
Mar is the founder of Mascoboutique. What started as an idea to dress and equip her own dog became, over the years, a reference boutique in Madrid for families with dogs. Every t-shirt, harness or accessory that comes into the shop passes through her hands first: she tests the materials, looks at the stitching and pictures the dog who's going to use it. That exigency is what she also applies to the blog: here we don't recommend what sells best, but what she'd put on her own dog.
